Anyone who refuses to accept that democracy is a flawed form of government should take a closer look at the “Swiss case” where they’re currently holding this “10-million” referendum.
It’s hard to stomach all the nonsense that was said and written in the debate leading up to the referendum. They act as if they don’t realize that nothing in their country would function without foreigners. There would be no clean restrooms, no taxi rides, no coffee served, and no sick people cared for. That wouldn’t a problem in and of itself; it’s the same here in the Gulf.
The problem is that they then grant foreigners the almost same rights as locals. They pay them the same wages, allow them to move about freely, and some crackpots even want to give them political rights. That can only lead to problems; even 10% of foreigners would cause social strain under such conditions.
If they seriously wanted to change this, they must drastically restrict the rights of foreigners. A nanny only needs a small room without windows. If they aren’t paid as much, they’ll place less strain on the infrastructure. And if they don’t bring their families along, there’s no need to educate children who don’t speak the local language.
They view the fact that they are able to vote to cap the population as a positive testament to their democratic system. Only, they overlook the fact that it was their own democratic processes that got them into this mess in the first place. No sane ruler in our region would have subjected his subjects to such madness.
